Their Story
Toshiaki Fushimi was a Japanese cyclist who won the Silver Medal in the Men's team sprint in the 2004 Summer Olympics along with Masaki Inoue and Tomohiro Nagatsuka, and was mostly known as a keirin cyclist with over 400 victories. Born in Shirakawa, Fukushima Prefecture, Fushimi turned professional in April 1995, launching a career spanning more than three decades. He won 619 of the 2,423 races he competed in, capturing the sport's most prestigious title, the KEIRIN Grand Prix, twice, in 2001 and 2007. Fushimi died after crashing during the Matsusaka Keirin race, when he appeared to try to avoid a race collision by veering toward the outer barrier. Riding in seventh position on the final lap, he attempted to avoid two fallen riders ahead of him in the final corner before striking the outer safety fence. He suffered serious injuries and tragically died at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday morning. His legacy as one of Japan's greatest keirin racers and an Olympic medalist will endure in the hearts of the cycling community worldwide.
