Sonia Antinori (1963 – 2026)

Their Story

Sonia Antinori was a prominent voice in contemporary Italian theater, renowned for her original dramatic works that reached audiences across Europe and beyond. She studied visual arts, theater, and ballet at the University of Florence, beginning her professional career in 1990. Her plays were translated into multiple languages and staged at prestigious theaters and festivals worldwide, earning international recognition for their innovative vision. A versatile creative artist, Antinori also distinguished herself as a skilled translator, bringing important European works into Italian. Her translation of Werner Schwab's "Volksvernichtung" received the prestigious Premio Ubu in 2007. Beyond her own theatrical work, she generously shared her expertise as an educator, teaching playwriting and acting at institutions including the Scuola Holden in Turin and the University of Venice, as well as conducting workshops across Europe, South America, and Africa. In 2006, she founded the association Malte (Musica, Arte, Letteratura, Teatro, Etc.) in Ancona, serving as its artistic director. Despite a long illness, Antinori remained committed to her artistic mission until her final days, continuing to mentor young artists and embodying her belief that storytelling and art were essential to understanding existence.
