Their Story
Rudolph Arthur Marcus was born in Montreal, Quebec, to Esther Cohen and Myer Marcus. He excelled at mathematics from an early age and earned his B.Sc. (1943) and Ph.D. (1946) from McGill University. Beginning in the 1950s, Marcus devoted himself to understanding electron-transfer reactions and the crucial role of solvent molecules in determining reaction rates. From 1956 to 1965, he developed the groundbreaking Marcus theory, which describes electron transfer among molecules in solution by accounting for changes in the structure of reacting molecules and their surrounding solvent. This theory has found applications across chemistry and biology, including photosynthesis, corrosion, and enzymatic processes. He joined Caltech as the Arthur A. Noyes Professor of Chemistry in 1978 and remained there for 48 years. His contributions earned him the 1992 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Beyond his scientific achievements, Marcus was celebrated as a devoted mentor and collaborator whose curiosity and open spirit inspired generations of researchers. At age 102, he was still actively leading his research group and authoring scientific papers.
