Ronell Johnson was a beloved trombonist, tubist, and vocalist best known for his work with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Born and raised in New Orleans' Gentilly neighborhood, Johnson came from a deeply musical family and began performing professionally at age twelve. His warm trombone sound, agile tuba playing, and soulful vocals made him a cornerstone of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band's lineup from 2012 until his death.\n\nBefore joining Preservation Hall, Johnson co-founded the Coolbone Brass Band with his brother Steven in the mid-1990s and performed with the Olympia Brass Band and other local ensembles. A graduate of the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, Johnson brought versatility to traditional jazz, funk, and brass band settings. As a bandleader and recording artist, he released projects including the album "That Gentilly Swing" (2017), celebrating his neighborhood roots.\n\nJohnson's impact extended far beyond music. Preservation Hall described his presence as "larger than life, uplifting everyone who had the honor of crossing paths with him." His joy, kindness, and generosity left a lasting mark on the New Orleans music community and audiences worldwide. Johnson passed away following a heart attack, leaving behind a legacy as a tradition bearer who kept New Orleans' early jazz heritage vibrant for contemporary listeners.
