Their Story

Olaf Tufte was one of Norway's greatest rowers and one of the sport's most enduring and beloved champions. Over a career spanning 26 years, he represented Norway at seven consecutive Olympic Games from 1996 to 2020, a remarkable achievement matched by very few athletes in any sport. As a single sculler, he won two Olympic gold medals at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008, and was twice world champion in 1998 and 2003, making him the first Norwegian ever to hold that distinction. Beyond his four Olympic medals spanning three decades, he compiled six world championship medals across multiple boat categories. What set Tufte apart was not only his extraordinary competitive achievements but his multifaceted approach to life. Alongside his rowing career, he operated his family farm, volunteered as a firefighter, established his own clothing brand, and was even involved in brewing. He was renowned in the rowing community for his mentorship, kindness toward rivals who became lifelong friends, and his ability to balance elite-level sport with a richly diversified life. Remembered as a fierce competitor who never stopped showing up and a true gentleman of the sport, Tufte embodied the values of dedication and integrity. He is survived by his wife Aina and their two children.
