Their Story
Norvell Kay Granger was a pioneering American politician who broke barriers throughout her career in public service. Beginning as a teacher and businesswoman, she moved into civic leadership in Fort Worth, serving on the city's zoning commission and city council before becoming the first female mayor of Fort Worth in 1991, a position she held until 1995. In 1996, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives representing Texas's 12th congressional district, making her the first Republican woman elected to represent Texas in Congress. Over her nearly three-decade tenure in the House, Granger earned respect across the aisle for her work on key committees. From 2023 to 2024, she made history once again by becoming the first Republican woman to chair the House Committee on Appropriations, a position of significant legislative influence. Granger retired from Congress in 2025 after deciding not to seek reelection, spending her final years at a senior living facility in her hometown of Fort Worth.
