Their Story

Mustafa Monwar, affectionately known as the "Puppet Man of Bangladesh," was a towering cultural figure whose artistry touched generations. Born on September 1, 1935, in Magura to poet Golam Mostofa, he became a pioneering force in puppetry, painting, sculpture, television, and children's cultural programming. During the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, he brought hope to refugee children through puppet shows, creating memorable works that resonated with audiences seeking solace and inspiration. Throughout his distinguished career, Monwar served as a professor of fine arts and held key positions at major cultural institutions, including Bangladesh Television where he worked as director general. His iconic television puppet show "Moner Kotha" aired for 12 years and became beloved by generations of children, introducing them to traditional folklore through beautifully crafted characters. He also adapted classic literary works by Shakespeare, Tagore, and Hans Christian Andersen for television audiences. In recognition of his immense contributions to Bangladesh's artistic heritage, he received the prestigious Ekushey Padak in 2004, one of the country's highest civilian honors. Beyond his creative achievements, Monwar dedicated himself to nurturing young talent and preserving Bangladesh's rich cultural traditions. He founded the Educational Puppet Development Centre and served as chairman of Bangladesh Shishu Academy, leaving an enduring legacy that continues to inspire artists and educators. His multifaceted career demonstrated the power of art as both a medium for social change and an instrument for bringing joy and imagination to young minds.
