Muhammad Jamiruddin Sircar (1931 – 2026)

Their Story

Muhammad Jamiruddin Sircar was a distinguished Bangladeshi barrister and politician who served as the acting President of Bangladesh from June to September 2002. A founding member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, he remained a member of its standing committee throughout his life. Born on 1 December 1931 in Panchagarh, he studied history and law at the University of Dhaka before qualifying as a barrister from Lincoln's Inn in London. He established himself as an expert in constitutional, civil, and criminal law at the Bangladesh Supreme Court. Throughout his long political career spanning more than five decades, Sircar held numerous high offices. He served in the cabinet under President Ziaur Rahman as state minister for public works and urban development, and later as state minister for foreign affairs. After the Bangladesh Nationalist Party returned to power in 1991, he served as state minister for land, followed by roles as minister of education and minister of science and technology. His most prominent legislative role came when he served as Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad from 2001 to 2009. In recognition of his contributions to education, he established Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar Collegiate Institute in his birthplace of Panchagarh in 1990. Sircar was married to Nur Akhtar for many decades. They had three children: a daughter Nilufar Jamir and two sons, Muhammad Nawshad Zamir and Naufal Zamir, both of whom became lawyers. He passed away at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in Dhaka at the age of 94, leaving behind a legacy of public service and dedication to parliamentary democracy.
