Michael Kapovich (1963 – 2026)

Their Story

Michael Kapovich was a distinguished Russian-American mathematician whose contributions spanned low-dimensional geometry, topology, and geometric group theory. Born in Novosibirsk, he earned his doctorate in 1988 at the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics, where he studied flat conformal structures on 3-manifolds under the guidance of Samuel Leibovich Krushkal. His career culminated in a professorship at the University of California, Davis, which he held from 2003 onward. Kapovich's research encompassed a wide range of areas including Kleinian groups, hyperbolic geometry, geometric representation theory in Lie groups, spaces of nonpositive curvature, and the study of configuration spaces of arrangements and mechanical linkages. His work was recognized internationally; in 2006, he delivered an Invited Speaker address at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Madrid, presenting his findings on generalized triangle inequalities and their applications. His intellectual legacy extended through his family, including his wife Jennifer Schultens, also a mathematician, and his brothers Ilya and Vitali, both accomplished mathematicians in their own right. He remained connected to the broader scholarly community through these and other professional relationships throughout his life.
