Their Story

Marianthi "Maro" Kontou was a distinguished Greek actress and politician whose career spanned decades and encompassed both the arts and public service. From 1954 onwards, she performed extensively in theatre and appeared in more than sixty films, establishing herself as a prominent figure during the golden age of Greek cinema. Her notable film roles included appearances in works such as "And the Wife Shall Revere Her Husband" and "Woe to the Young," showcasing her versatility and talent across various dramatic genres. Beyond her accomplishments in cinema, Kontou dedicated herself to public service, serving as a member of the Hellenic Parliament representing the Athens A constituency. Elected as a member of New Democracy, she served in parliament during two periods: from 1999 to 2004 and again from 2006 to 2007. Her dual legacy as both a premier figure of Greek cinema's golden era and a dedicated political representative earned her recognition and respect across Greek cultural and political circles. Kontou passed away on 15 July 2026 at the age of 92, following a period of hospitalization at Attikon Hospital in Athens for respiratory and pulmonary conditions. Her death was attributed to lung cancer.
