Marcelo Miranda Soares was a prominent Brazilian politician who served in key leadership roles across multiple decades. A member of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB), he built a career in public service spanning local and state government positions in Mato Grosso do Sul. His political career included serving as mayor of Campo Grande from 1977 to 1979, followed by his election as governor of Mato Grosso do Sul in two separate terms—first from 1979 to 1980, and again from 1987 to 1991. In 1982, he was elected to the Senate, further demonstrating his influence in Brazilian politics. In his later years, he served as superintendent of the National Department of Transport Infrastructure in Mato Grosso do Sul from 2003 until 2012. Soares passed away on June 23, 2026, at the age of 87, with his death resulting from multiple organ failure complicated by pneumonia.
