Their Story
M. P. Parameswaran was an influential Indian nuclear engineer and educationist who dedicated his life to both scientific advancement and public engagement with science. Born in Kerala in 1935, he earned his engineering degree from the College of Engineering, Trivandrum in 1956, and completed his PhD in Nuclear Engineering from Moscow Power Engineering Institute in 1965. He spent two decades at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Mumbai, contributing significantly to India's nuclear programme, before transitioning in 1975 to become a full-time development activist and science communicator. Parameswaran became a prominent figure in Kerala's people's science movement, founding member of the Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad, and prolific writer on science, technology, and development. His visionary "Fourth World Theory" proposed decentralized democracy and sustainable economics, sparking major intellectual discussions in progressive circles across Kerala. Though his ideas led to expulsion from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 2004, his scholarly contributions to science education and public discourse remained widely respected. In recognition of his lifetime achievements, he received the Kerala Sree Award in 2022. He passed away in Thrissur at age 91, leaving behind a legacy of advancing scientific temperament and critical thinking in India.
