Their Story
Luisa Cunha was a visionary Portuguese artist who shaped contemporary art through her innovative multidisciplinary practice spanning sculpture, installation, photography, video, performance, and particularly her signature sonic works. Born in Lisbon in 1949, she initially pursued an academic career in German philology before discovering her artistic calling at age 37, when she enrolled in a sculpture course at AR.CO in 1994. Her work, rooted in a profound understanding of perception and human communication, explored the boundaries between sound and language, public and private, presence and absence. She exhibited internationally at prestigious venues including the Sydney Biennial in 2004 and represented Portugal at the São Paulo Biennial in 2021. In 2021, she received the prestigious EDP Foundation Art Grand Prize, a triennial award recognizing Portugal's most significant contemporary artists, celebrated for her originality and influence on younger generations. Her first retrospective, "Hello! Are You There?" (2023), spanning three decades of her work, confirmed her standing as one of the defining figures of Portuguese contemporary art. She died in Lisbon on July 6, 2026, after battling cancer, leaving behind a legacy of conceptually rigorous and deeply humanistic artistic practice.
