Their Story

Leslie Roy Mills was a distinguished New Zealand athlete whose career spanning more than a decade made him a four-time Olympic competitor from 1960 to 1972. Specializing in the shot put and discus throw, Mills became a celebrated figure in track and field, earning five medals at the Commonwealth Games and capturing gold in the discus at the 1966 Games. His athletic accomplishments established him as one of New Zealand's premier field event competitors during the mid-twentieth century. Beyond the athletic arena, Mills proved to be an innovative entrepreneur and devoted public servant. In 1968, he opened his first gymnasium, establishing the foundation for Les Mills International, the fitness company that would eventually expand globally under the leadership of his son Phillip Mills. Later in life, Mills transitioned to politics, serving as mayor of Auckland from 1990 to 1998, leading New Zealand's largest city through a significant period of its development. His legacy encompasses three distinct domains—Olympic competition, business enterprise, and civic leadership—reflecting a life of achievement and service.
