Konrad Beikircher (1945 – 2026)

Their Story

Konrad Johann Aloysia Beikircher was born in Bruneck, South Tyrol, in 1945. He moved to Bonn in 1965 to study psychology, musicology, and philosophy, graduating with a degree in psychology in 1970. For fifteen years he worked as a correctional psychologist at the Siegburg youth prison while performing Viennese chansons in Bonn taverns in the evenings. In 1984, West German Radio (WDR) discovered him and gave him his own radio column, "Sarens, Frau Walterscheidt," which became wildly successful and inspired him to quit his civil service job to pursue cabaret full-time. Beikircher became one of the Rhineland's most celebrated cabaret artists, filling halls for nearly five decades with performances exploring the region's distinctive dialect, character, and mentality. He was the first to celebrate the Rhineland dialect as "great," a message that resonated because he came from South Tyrol. Beyond cabaret, he published bestselling concert and opera guides, authored books on Rhineland culture and traditions, and performed as a singer of Italian songs and classical music. He received multiple honors for his contributions to Rhineland culture, including the Cologne Literature Prize in 2006. After nearly fifty years on stage, he was planning a farewell tour in 2026 when he passed away at age 80.
