Their Story

Júlio Duarte Langa was a Mozambican Catholic prelate who dedicated nearly seven decades to the service of the Church and the poorest communities of his nation. Born in Mangunze in 1927, he studied at the seminaries of Magude and Namaacha before his ordination as a priest in 1957. He served in pastoral roles for nearly twenty years before his appointment as Bishop of Xai-Xai in 1976, a position he held with humble devotion for twenty-eight years until his retirement in 2004. Cardinal Langa became known as a steadfast shepherd who remained close to his flock, prioritizing the vulnerable populations of his diocese even as Mozambique endured the turmoil of civil war and the challenges of independence. His tenure as bishop spanned one of the most turbulent periods in the nation's history, yet he earned deep respect for his pastoral care and fatherly presence among both clergy and laity. A gifted linguist, he played a significant role in translating the documents of the Second Vatican Council into Mozambique's main languages, facilitating their dissemination throughout the Catholic communities of the country. In 2015, at the age of 87, Pope Francis elevated him to the College of Cardinals in recognition of his distinguished pastoral charity. He became only the second cardinal in Mozambique's history, a distinction that reflected both the esteem in which he was held and the growing significance of the African church. Until his death at 98, Cardinal Langa remained a symbol of faithful, selfless service—a true pastor who chose presence and devotion over prominence.
