Joseph Paradi (2026)

Their Story

Joseph C. Paradi was a distinguished Hungarian-Canadian academic and entrepreneur who made significant contributions to chemical engineering education and technology entrepreneurship. Born in Hungary in 1941, Paradi grew up in a family of ice dancers and became an accomplished athlete himself, competing in junior hockey and speed skating before his life changed dramatically with the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. He and his parents escaped the country in November 1956, eventually settling in Canada and beginning a new chapter. Paradi earned his B.A.Sc., M.A.Sc., and Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Toronto, completing his doctoral studies in 1975. Before returning to academia, he founded Dataline Inc., a pioneering computer-services company, which he successfully led for two decades before selling to a U.S. firm in 1987. In 1989, he joined the University of Toronto as a permanent staff member, ultimately serving as a distinguished professor for over 15 years before his retirement in 2006. Even after retiring, he remained active in teaching entrepreneurship and conducting research. As a dedicated educator and visionary, Paradi supervised the research of 17 doctoral students and 62 master's students, along with numerous postdoctoral researchers and undergraduate thesis students. He founded and directed the Centre for Management of Technology and Entrepreneurship, establishing himself as a leader in technology business development. His entrepreneurial spirit extended to founding Parcorp Ltd., which invested in and supported the growth of small Canadian high-tech companies, as well as several other technology ventures and international partnerships. He held the chair in Information Engineering within the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry, leaving an enduring legacy in engineering education and innovation.
