Dr. Joan Viñas i Salas was a distinguished Spanish surgeon and academic leader whose career exemplified dedication to medical excellence, research, and humanistic values. Born in Mataró in 1950, he earned his medical degree from the University of Barcelona and built a career centered at the University of Lleida, where he served as rector from 2003 to 2011. As a catedrático (full professor) of surgery, Viñas conducted pioneering research in colorectal carcinogenesis and bioethics, establishing himself as a leading figure in Catalan medicine. Beyond his academic roles, he served as head of general surgery at Hospital Universitario Arnau de Vilanova, transforming it into a leading teaching hospital, and held significant leadership positions including president of the Catalan Institute of Health (2012–2013) and president of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia (2013–2017). Viñas was recognized for his commitment to humanitarian causes, including surgical missions to Mozambique and Chad, founding the Lleida Anti-AIDS Association, and serving on numerous bioethics committees. His numerous honors included the Creu de Sant Jordi in 2018 and the Josep Trueta Medal in 2019. Facing a kidney cancer diagnosed in 2014 with characteristic grace and reflection, he authored a book about living with illness from a physician's perspective. Dr. Viñas embodied medicine as integral service to the person, and his legacy continues to inspire medical professionals in Catalonia and beyond.
