Jennifer Finch (1966 – 2026)

Their Story

Jennifer Finch was an American musician, designer and photographer most notable for being the primary bass player of the punk rock band L7. She joined the Los Angeles punk band in 1986 as bassist and vocalist and played on five of their studio albums, including 1990's Smell The Magic and 1992's Bricks Are Heavy, two of the grunge era's essential and most influential albums. She wrote several of the band's songs including "(Right On) Thru," "Everglade," "One More Thing" and "Shirley." She served as the group's bassist for most of their Nineties peak before leaving the band in 1996 at age 30. Finch also wrote music and performed with her bands OtherStarPeople and The Shocker in the interim before joining the reunited L7 in 2014. Beyond her musical legacy, Finch built a respected career as a photographer, having documented Los Angeles' early punk scene from the age of 13, with her collection "14 and Shooting," featuring images of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bad Religion, Red Kross and The Cramps, exhibited in Hollywood and later travelled to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She launched her own label, Little Pusher Records; and worked prolifically as a photographer. In 2014, L7 reformed with the primary line up of Finch with Suzi Gardner, Donita Sparks, and Dee Plakas. They toured extensively and released new singles in 2017 and 2018. L7's latest full album Scatter the Rats was released on Blackheart Records on May 3, 2019, to generally favorable reviews.
