Their Story
Jean-Marc Sylvestre was a prominent French economic journalist who became one of the most recognizable voices in financial reporting on French television. Born in Alençon on 29 October 1946, he pursued studies in economics, earning a doctorate from Paris-Dauphine University before beginning his career as an academic at the University of Caen. In the early 1970s, he transitioned to journalism, working for prestigious publications including L'Expansion, Le Nouvel Économiste, and the Quotidien de Paris, where he became head of the economics department.\n\nSylvestre rose to prominence through his work on television, joining TF1 and later LCI in 1994, where he became one of the leading specialists in economic reporting for nearly two decades. Recognizable for his pedagogical approach and clear explanations of complex financial matters, he hosted programs such as Décideur and Les Coulisses de l'économie. Known as a self-described liberal, he also worked for i>Télé, BFM Business, and B Smart, and served as deputy director of information at TF1 and LCI from 2008. A prolific author of essays on economic issues, he maintained a regular column on Atlantico for many years, continuing to explain contemporary economic challenges to the public until his death on 21 July 2026.
