Their Story

Iivo Nei was a celebrated Estonian chess grandmaster who inspired generations of players both through his own competitive achievements and his later work as a trainer and advisor. Born in Tartu and inspired by the legendary Paul Keres, Nei demonstrated exceptional talent from an early age, placing third at the 1947 USSR Junior Championship and tying for first with future world championship challenger Viktor Korchnoi just a year later. Throughout a distinguished career spanning several decades, he captured the Estonian Championship eight times between 1951 and 1974, cementing his status as one of the country's dominant chess figures. A pivotal moment came in 1964 when he tied for first with Paul Keres himself at the prestigious Beverwijk tournament, a triumph that marked the high point of his competitive play. Beyond tournament success, Nei distinguished himself as a trusted confidant to world champions, serving as one of Boris Spassky's seconds during the historic 1972 Fischer-Spassky World Championship match and later supporting both Nona Gaprindashvili and Maia Chiburdanidze in their title defenses. Following his retirement from top-level competition, he devoted himself to coaching and chess administration, notably serving as FIDE representative for the Baltic region and authoring several books. In recognition of his lifetime contributions to chess, he was awarded the title of Honorary Grandmaster by FIDE in February 2024, and following the death of Andreas Dückstein later that year, became the oldest living grandmaster—a testament to his enduring vitality and the respect he commanded in the chess world.
