Their Story
Horacio Muratore was a pioneering figure in international basketball administration and a driving force behind Argentina's rise as a basketball powerhouse. Born in Tucumán in 1951, he devoted his career to developing the sport at both national and global levels. His influence was felt most prominently when he served as president of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) from 2014 to 2019, becoming the first and only Argentine to hold this prestigious position. Muratore's basketball journey began at Tucumán BB, the club where his father worked, eventually becoming its president from 1983 to 1992. He then led the Argentine Basketball Confederation from 1992 to 2008, a period that coincided with the emergence of Argentina's celebrated Golden generation of basketball players. His strategic leadership and vision extended beyond the national level: he served as president of FIBA Americas beginning in 2009 and as FIBA vice president before his election to the top post. After stepping down from the FIBA presidency, Muratore remained active in basketball administration, serving as president of the FIBA Foundation from 2019 to 2023 and founding the Basketball Champions League Americas. Beyond basketball, he was an accomplished accountant and educator, teaching accounting at Argentina's National University of Tucumán. His multifaceted contributions helped shape modern basketball governance and Argentine sports culture.
