Heinz Erbstößer (1940 – 2026)

Their Story

Heinz Erbstößer was a German sprinter of the Cold War era who represented both the unified German team and East Germany on the Olympic stage. Nicknamed "Wild Pea," he began his athletic career as a football player before becoming one of East Germany's most successful sprinters of the 1960s. Competing for SC Leipzig, he earned national recognition with multiple East German championships in both the 100 and 200 metres. Erbstößer's Olympic achievements included participation in the 1964 Tokyo Games as part of the all-German 4x100 relay team, and later competing for East Germany at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, where he achieved his best Olympic result with a fifth-place finish in the 4x100 relay. In Mexico City, his relay team twice set European records during their run to the final. Throughout his domestic career, he accumulated 20 East German titles across various sprint distances and relay events, establishing himself as a dominant force in East German athletics during the 1960s. Beyond competition, Erbstößer contributed to the field of sports science. He was educated as a chemical technician and went on to serve as a scientific member of the research center at the Deutsche Hochschule für Körperkultur (German Academy for Physical Culture) in Leipzig. In his later years, he remained connected to Leipzig and the athletic community that had been central to his life.
