Their Story
Harry Everett Mitchell was an American politician and educator who served as a U.S. representative representing Arizona's 5th congressional district from 2007 until 2011, and was a member of the Democratic Party. Born and raised in Tempe, Arizona, Mitchell earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Arizona State University in 1962 and later earned a Master of Public Administration degree from ASU in 1980. He was a teacher at Tempe High School, his high school alma mater, from 1964–1992. Mitchell was elected to the Tempe City Council in 1970, and in 1978, he became Tempe's Mayor, a seat that he held for nearly two decades until 1994. He was a huge advocate for the Rio Salado Project, which eventually resulted in the creation of Tempe Town Lake. Throughout his decades of public service—as educator, city council member, mayor, state senator, and congressman—Mitchell remained deeply committed to serving his community with integrity and dedication.
