Their Story

Guy Lindsay Scott was a Zambian politician of Scottish and English heritage who served his country across multiple decades in distinctive roles. Born in Livingstone in 1944 to immigrant parents, he studied economics at Cambridge before returning to help build post-independence Zambia. His career included service as a government planner, founder of the successful agribusiness Walkover Estates, Minister of Agriculture during the devastating 1992 drought, and Member of Parliament for constituencies in Mpika and Lusaka. In 2011, he became the first white Zambian to serve as Vice President under Michael Sata. Following Sata's death in 2014, Scott became Acting President for a constitutional interim period, making him Africa's first white head of state in over two decades. Though constitutionally barred from contesting the presidency himself, he steered Zambia through a delicate political transition with calm judgment. A Cambridge-educated economist and pragmatic pragmatist known for sharp intellect and candid speech, Scott published a memoir of his political journey in 2019. He was married to Charlotte Harland, a British doctor, and lived in Lusaka with a lifelong passion for agriculture and democratic governance.
