Their Story

Sir Garfield St Aubrun Sobers, known to the cricket world as Gary Sobers, stands among the sport's immortals. Born in Bridgetown, Barbados, he revolutionized cricket as a complete all-rounder—a brilliant batsman, versatile bowler, and exceptional fielder whose abilities transcended the sport's conventions. Making his Test debut for the West Indies in 1954 as a teenager, Sobers went on to play 93 Tests, amassing over 8,000 runs with a remarkable average of 57.78 while capturing 235 wickets, demonstrating mastery across every aspect of the game. Sobers' record of 365 not out, set against Pakistan in 1958, remained the highest individual Test innings score for 36 years until Brian Lara's 375. His captaincy of the West Indies from 1965 to 1972 elevated the team to new heights, while his 383 first-class matches produced over 28,000 runs and more than 1,000 wickets, a legacy unmatched in cricket history. Knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1975 and later named one of Barbados' 11 National Heroes by parliamentary act, Sobers embodied excellence, grace, and the transformative power of sporting genius.
