Their Story
Franco Baresi was an iconic Italian football legend whose career came to define defensive excellence and leadership in the sport. Playing as a sweeper and central defender for AC Milan across two decades, Baresi became synonymous with the club, serving as captain for 15 seasons and earning the affectionate nickname "Kaiser Franz" in tribute to Franz Beckenbauer. His contributions to Milan were extraordinary—he claimed three European Cup/UEFA Champions League titles, six Serie A championships, and numerous other domestic and international trophies, cementing his status as one of the greatest defenders of all time. On the international stage, Baresi was a cornerstone of Italy's football success. He was part of the 1982 World Cup-winning squad that ended a 44-year drought for the Azzurri, and he represented his country with distinction at three subsequent World Cups. His performances at the 1990 World Cup on home soil earned him selection to the FIFA All-Star Team as Italy finished third, while his leadership as captain at the 1994 World Cup demonstrated his enduring quality, despite the heartbreak of missing a penalty in the final shootout against Brazil. Baresi's legacy extends beyond his playing achievements. In 1999, he was voted Milan's Player of the Century, and in 2004, Pelé named him among the 125 Greatest Living Footballers. After retiring in 1997, Milan retired his number 6 shirt in his honor. He was inducted into the Italian Football Hall of Fame in 2013, a fitting recognition of a career that inspired generations of defenders and redefined what it meant to be a sweeper in modern football.
