Chun Yong-taek (1937 – 2026)

Their Story

Chun Yong-taek was a distinguished South Korean military officer, statesman, and intelligence official whose career spanned the critical decades of his nation's development. Born in 1937, he graduated from the Korea Military Academy and subsequently built a multifaceted career in service to South Korea. From 1996 to 2004, he represented his constituents in the National Assembly, where he was a member of both the National Congress for New Politics and the Millennium Democratic Party. His most prominent governmental role came when he served as Minister of National Defense from 1998 to 1999, a period coinciding with important security considerations on the Korean peninsula. Following his tenure as defense minister, he was appointed Director General of the National Intelligence Service in May 1999, serving in that sensitive position until late that year. His career reflected the evolution of South Korean governance from military-led administration toward civilian-led democracy and institutional development. He died on July 24, 2026, at the age of 88, leaving a legacy of service across multiple critical sectors of the South Korean government.
