Their Story

Chen Gang was a celebrated Chinese composer best known for his masterwork, the Butterfly Lovers' Violin Concerto, created in collaboration with fellow composer He Zhanhao while they were students at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 1959. Though He Zhanhao is often more widely credited for the concerto, Chen Gang was responsible for most of the composition's intricate development, with He contributing the iconic opening theme. The work premiered on May 27, 1959, at the Shanghai Music and Dance Festival and became one of the most acclaimed and performed Chinese classical compositions worldwide, winning five Golden Record prizes and a Platinum Record. Born in Shanghai on March 10, 1935, Chen Gang grew up in a musical family as the son of songwriter Chen Gexin, who introduced him to music and composition from an early age. He studied at the Shanghai Conservatory from 1955 to 1959 under distinguished teachers including the school's director Ding Shande and visiting Russian composer Valery Arzamanov. After graduating in 1960, he became a professor of composition at the Shanghai Conservatory and later served as director of the Guangxi Institute of the Arts. Throughout his distinguished career, Chen Gang composed numerous orchestral, vocal, and chamber works that masterfully blended Chinese and Western musical traditions. Beyond the Butterfly Lovers Concerto, he created notable compositions including the violin solo "Sunshine in Tashkurgan," the symphonic piece "A Moonlight Spring Night on the Flowers Surrounded River," the Oboe Concerto, and the violin concerto "Wang Zhaojun." His works were performed and appreciated across Asia, Europe, and North America, establishing him as one of China's most important contemporary composers and a bridge between Eastern and Western classical music traditions.
