Their Story

Carmelo Cedrún Ochandátegui was a Spanish former football goalkeeper and manager, born in Amorebieta-Etxano. He started his professional career with Athletic Bilbao, making his first-team debut on 15 April 1951 in a 3–0 home win against Sevilla FC, quickly becoming the club's first-choice goalkeeper. During his 14-year spell at Athletic, he appeared in 402 official matches and was instrumental in the club's 1955–56 La Liga championship, conceding only 31 goals in all 30 matches that season. Cedrún won a League title and three Copa del Rey trophies during his time at Athletic. After losing his starting position to José Ángel Iribar in 1964, he joined RCD Español, and later retired at age 38 while playing in the United States for the Baltimore Bays. He earned 13 caps for the Spanish national team, making his debut in 1954 and participating in the 1962 FIFA World Cup. Following his playing career, Cedrún became a football coach, most notably managing RC Celta de Vigo in the 1976–77 season.
