Camillo Ruini (1931 – 2026)

Their Story

Cardinal Camillo Ruini was born in Sassuolo in the Emilia-Romagna region on February 19, 1931. He was ordained a priest in 1954 and carried out pastoral and academic duties for decades in his diocese of origin before being appointed auxiliary bishop of Reggio Emilia-Guastalla in 1983. He was made a cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 1991, and by papal confirmation served as president of the Italian Episcopal Conference from 1991 to 2007 and as vicar general of the Diocese of Rome from 1991 to 2008. During his tenure as president of the Italian Episcopal Conference, he accompanied the life of the Church in Italy under the pontificates of Saint John Paul II and Benedict XVI. Ruini was very active as a spokesperson for the Church and was one of the Church officials who most often appeared on Italian television, newspapers, and magazines. He was a close collaborator of Pope St John Paul II and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and was widely regarded as one of the leading voices of Italy's conservative episcopate. From 2010 to 2014, under Pope Benedict XVI, he led an international commission established by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to investigate the apparitions of Medjugorje, which concluded that the first apparitions in 1981 likely had supernatural origins.
