Their Story
Béla Kádár was a distinguished Hungarian economist and politician who played a significant role in Hungary's post-communist transition. Born in Pécs in 1934, he earned his economics degree in 1956 and built a career spanning academia, government, and international finance. Kádár served as Minister of International Economic Relations during the crucial period of 1990–1994, and was elected to parliament representing the Hungarian Democratic Forum from 1994 to 1998. His expertise in international trade and economic development was reflected in his leadership of Hungary's representation to the OECD and his work with the Hungarian National Bank's monetary authorities. A Széchenyi Prize recipient and full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences from 2007, Kádár contributed significantly to Hungarian economic policy and scholarship. He remained active in academic and professional circles, serving as honorary president of the Hungarian Economic Association until his death at age 93.
