Antonio Martínez Aneiros (1933 – 2026)

Their Story

Antonio Martínez Aneiros was born in 1933 in the parish of O Val in Narón, Galicia. He chose a path of priesthood, beginning his ministry in the early 1960s at the parish of San Pablo in Ferrol. He was recognized as one of the "red priests" of the region who opposed Francoist authoritarianism and risked imprisonment for his opposition to the regime. Deeply committed to aiding the poor and supporting just causes, Aneiros collaborated actively with Caritas and worked to modernize the Church through internal reforms. After serving as a priest during the 1960s and 1970s, he served as mayor of Narón between 1979 and 1985. He was elected as a parliamentary deputy in the Parliament of Galicia, serving throughout the second legislature until 1989. He was a family man and father of three daughters who later worked as a driving school instructor.
