Alexis Stamatis (1960 – 2026)

Their Story

Alexis Stamatis was one of the most versatile and prolific figures in contemporary Greek literature. Born in Athens to architect Costas Stamatis and acclaimed actress Betty Arvaniti, he pursued formal studies in architecture at the National Technical University of Athens before earning postgraduate degrees in architecture and film in London. This diverse educational background deeply influenced his creative work across multiple literary forms. Over a distinguished career spanning decades, Stamatis published 34 books, including 20 novels, six books of poetry, and numerous plays and screenplays. His second novel, Bar Flaubert (2000), became a critically acclaimed bestseller published across Europe. His novel American Fugue won the prestigious U.S. National Endowment for the Arts International Literature Award, while his poetry collection The Architecture of Interior Spaces received the Nikiforos Vrettakos Prize. His children's book Alkis and the Labyrinth won the first prize from the Circle of Greek Children's Books (IBBY Greece). Works such as The Seventh Elephant, Mother Ash, and The Book of Rain reached international audiences through translation into numerous languages. Beyond his published works, Stamatis was a respected teacher of creative writing at various institutions and maintained a regular column at the Greek newspaper VIMA. He also worked as a screenwriter and playwright, with stage productions and film adaptations of his work. Married to actress Eva Simatou and father to a son, Stamatis passed away in July 2026 following a prolonged battle with a rare blood disorder, leaving behind a rich legacy that unified artistic innovation, intellectual rigor, and unwavering curiosity across all forms of expression.
