Their Story

Born Alejandro Wigberto Bueno López on September 6, 1963, in San José de las Matas in the province of Santiago, Alex Bueno grew up in a musical family—his mother and grandmother sang and played guitar, his father played guitar and violin, and his brother Felipe was also a singer. He sang at family gatherings, at school, and in his local church before moving to Santo Domingo, where he won first place in a 1978 vocal contest and joined Orquesta Liberación as lead singer. In 1984, he launched his solo career, working with arrangers Manuel Tejada and Ramón Orlando to usher in a more melodic, romantic style of merengue that would define his sound for decades. Songs like "Colegiala," "Qué Cara Más Bonita," "Querida," "Esa Pared," and "La Radio" became staples of the Dominican songbook, earning him the affectionate nicknames "El Mayimbito" and "El Ruiseñor de la Sierra." In 1998, Bueno embraced bachata with the album 'Bachata a Su Tiempo', a reinvention that broadened his audience and helped fuel the genre's explosive rise both at home and internationally. Across more than four decades, Bueno collaborated with a who's who of Dominican music, including Antony Santos, Romeo Santos, Fernando Villalona, and Juan Luis Guerra, earning Soberano and Premio Lo Nuestro recognitions and a Latin Grammy nomination for his album '20 Años Después'.
