Adolfo Battaglia (1930 – 2026)

Their Story

Adolfo Battaglia was a distinguished Italian journalist and politician who devoted much of his career to public service and political commentary. Born in Viterbo in 1930, he earned a degree in law from Rome and built a dual career spanning journalism and politics. As a journalist, he worked as editor-in-chief of Annuario Politico Italiano and contributed to major Italian publications including La Stampa, Il Mondo, and Panorama, as well as directing La Voce Repubblicana. Battaglia's political career began in 1965 when he joined the Italian Republican Party, where he played an active role in the party's pro-socialist faction and served on its national directorate. In 1972, he was first elected to the Chamber of Deputies, where he served as a deputy for six consecutive terms spanning legislatures VI through XI. In the 1980s, he rose to become the parliamentary leader of his party. He also served as undersecretary for foreign affairs on two separate occasions. From 1987 to 1991, Battaglia achieved his highest position as Minister of Industry, Commerce and Craftsmanship, serving in three successive cabinets under prime ministers Giovanni Goria, Ciriaco De Mita, and Giulio Andreotti. His tenure reflected both his expertise in economic policy and his ability to work across different administrations. Battaglia remained active in political life into his later years, passing away at age 96.
