Wai Ching Ho was a Hong Kong-born actress who became an iconic figure in American film, television, and theater. Born in Hong Kong on November 16, 1943, where she grew up fluent in both Cantonese and Mandarin, Ho pursued her craft at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts before immigrating to New York City around 1964. She began her television career in 1987 with a role in the soap opera One Life to Live and went on to build a diverse four-decade career spanning multiple genres. Ho became best known to international audiences for her portrayal of the enigmatic villain Madame Gao in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing across Daredevil (2015–2016), Iron Fist, and The Defenders (both 2017). Her work extended far beyond these iconic roles: she lent her voice to Pixar's Turning Red as Grandma Wu, appeared in the crime drama Hustlers, and made numerous guest appearances across the Law & Order franchise spanning decades. On stage, she starred in Celine Song's acclaimed play Endlings and worked extensively in Off-Broadway and regional theater, often portraying complex maternal and elder figures in works by Asian American playwrights. Throughout her career, Ho won acclaim for her nuanced performances, including Best Actress awards at international film festivals for her work in Robot Stories. Her colleagues and collaborators recognized her not only as a stellar artist but as a trailblazer who spent nearly forty years shaping how Asian and Asian American characters were written and performed on major platforms. Ho passed away on July 12, 2026, at the age of 82.
