Their Story
Trond Johansen was a legendary figure in Norwegian intelligence and wartime resistance. Born in Drammen on 13 May 1924, he lived a life dedicated to serving Norway across more than seven decades. During World War II, as a young man working under the codename "kontoristen" (the clerk), Johansen risked his life distributing illegal newspapers and, after being forced into labour at a German military office in 1943, he carefully smuggled out classified documents that provided vital intelligence on German troop movements from Norwegian ports. This intelligence work was so valued that his commanders described him as essential to the nation's survival. After the war, Johansen became the first assistant director of the Norwegian Intelligence Service and served for nearly fifty years, playing a key role in building intelligence cooperation with West Germany and later leading covert operations and special intelligence collection efforts during the Cold War. Recognised for his extraordinary service, he was decorated with the Norwegian Defence Cross of Honour. Johansen maintained his sharp mind and dedication into his final years; at age 101 he was still reading five newspapers daily. When he turned 100 in May 2024, the Intelligence Service honoured him as their "Grand Old Man," possibly the last surviving figure from wartime resistance intelligence. He passed away on 19 June 2026, at the age of 102, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of service and sacrifice.
