Their Story
Theoliptos Fenerlis was born Iakovos on April 17, 1957, in Tarabya on the Bosphorus as the eldest son of Georgios Fenerlis and Olga Vlachopoulou. Raised in an Orthodox Christian household, he received his early education locally before attending the prestigious Zographeion Lyceum in Constantinople, graduating in 1975. He pursued theological studies at the Faculty of Theology of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. On March 27, 1977, he was ordained to the diaconate at the Patriarchal Church of St. George in the Phanar by Metropolitan Bartholomew (later Ecumenical Patriarch), receiving the ecclesiastical name Theoleptos. He served the Ecumenical Patriarchate in numerous responsible positions, becoming Grand Archdeacon in 1995 and Grand Protosyncellus in 1997. On September 4, 2000, he was elected Metropolitan of Iconium by the Holy and Sacred Synod and consecrated bishop shortly thereafter. He faithfully served in this metropolitan role for over twenty-six years, marking his ministry with dedication and unwavering loyalty to the Ecumenical Patriarchate until his repose on June 18, 2026.
