Their Story

Chaplain (Major General) Orris Eugene Kelly was a distinguished American military officer whose career spanned more than three decades of service to the United States Army. Born in rural Montrose, Kansas, Kelly's path to the chaplaincy was shaped by a transformative experience during World War II. Originally aspiring to become an engineer, his presence among the ruins of Dresden as a military police officer moved him profoundly, redirecting his life toward religious and pastoral service. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1945 and served through multiple wars and global assignments. As the 14th Chief of Chaplains from 1975 to 1979, Kelly provided spiritual leadership across the Army Chaplain Corps during a pivotal period in military history. He brought distinction to his command through thoughtful stewardship of the chaplaincy's mission. His tenure witnessed his support for important historical documentation of the Army Chaplaincy, work that began in 1973 and produced five comprehensive volumes preserving the legacy of military ministry. Beyond his official duties, Kelly was known for his compassion and commitment to caring for others—demonstrated by his adoption of two Japanese orphans with his wife Phyllis during his assignment in Japan in the 1950s. After retiring from the Army in 1979, Kelly continued his work in pastoral care, serving the United Methodist Church and later as Vice President of Pastoral Services for the Hospital Corporation of America, overseeing spiritual care programs across hundreds of hospitals. His life of service earned him the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, and numerous other honors, including the Four Chaplains Award from B'nai Brith in 1977, reflecting his interfaith leadership. Kelly lived to age 100, leaving a legacy of faith, leadership, and dedication to spiritual care that touched countless lives throughout his century of service.
