Their Story
Nigel Cabourn, one of the UK's most respected and well-loved designers, died of cancer, aged 77. Born on 7 October 1949 near Scunthorpe, Cabourn spent his teens in the new town of Peterlee, County Durham, where his father was the postmaster. He studied fashion design at Northumbria University between 1967 and 1971 and his studio and business remained based in North East England. He began his eponymous label in the 1970s, and became known for his menswear collections influenced by military clothing and vintage clothing, using fabrics such as Harris Tweed and Ventile. Like his contemporaries and friends Sir Paul Smith and Margaret Howell, Cabourn was most revered in Japan, where his main brand and various sub-brands enjoyed cult status since the early 1980s. Driven by a long-standing passion for vintage clothing, fabrics and design details, Nigel was not influenced by trends, but by inspirational stories of historical events and human endeavour. In 2013 he launched his first womenswear collection. On 11 March 2026, Drapers recognised Cabourn's contribution to the industry with the inaugural Outstanding Contribution Award at the Drapers Conscious Fashion Awards 2026.
