Their Story
Mahmoud Mollaghasemi Tabrizi was an Iranian freestyle wrestler who represented his country at the highest levels of international competition. Beginning his wrestling career at age 18 despite humble circumstances—his father, a shoemaker, passed away during his childhood, requiring young Mahmoud to work and support his family—he rose to become one of Iran's athletic ambassadors. His competitive achievements included a silver medal at the 1951 World Championships and a bronze medal at the 1952 Summer Olympics, the latter a crowning achievement in his wrestling career. After stepping away from competition, Mollaghasemi devoted himself to developing the next generation of wrestlers, serving as a wrestling coach and international referee. He continued his involvement with the sport by attending the 1964 Olympics in an official capacity, demonstrating his enduring commitment to wrestling. Mollaghasemi lived a long and full life, passing away at age 97 in June 2026.
