Their Story

Luiz Carlos Barreto was born on May 20, 1928 in Sobral, Ceará, Brazil. He moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1947 at the age of 19, and worked as a photographer for the important newsmagazine O Cruzeiro. His approach to cinema came after an encounter with Glauber Rocha during the filming of "Barravento", an episode that led him to become one of the central figures of Cinema Novo. Barreto was one of the driving forces of the Cinema Novo movement in the 1960s and 1970s, a transformative avant-garde movement that gained international recognition. Together with his wife Lucy Barreto, whom he was married to for 71 years, he founded the production company LC Barreto, responsible for more than 80 productions and co-productions over more than six decades. Barreto is regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of Brazilian cinema, with a career spanning six decades. His three children—Bruno, Fábio, and Paula—all pursued careers in cinema. He died on July 22, 2026, with the official cause being pneumonia.
