Their Story

Luis Goytisolo was born in Barcelona in 1935 and began writing from a young age as part of the Circle of Barcelona, considered the foundation of the Generation of the 1950s. He initially studied law in 1953 but abandoned his studies to pursue literature and political activism against Francoist Spain, spending four months in Carabanchel Prison in 1963 for his communist affiliations. During his time in prison, he began writing his masterpiece Antagony, taking notes on pieces of toilet paper. A renowned novelist, Goytisolo was one of the most influential writers of the second half of the twentieth century and among the great renovators of contemporary narrative. Alongside his brothers José Agustín Goytisolo and Juan Goytisolo, he formed one of the most influential literary families in Spanish letters, with all three committed to breaking established molds and expanding the horizons of literature in the post-war period. He was elected to the Real Academia Española in 1994 and assumed his position in 1995, receiving the Premio Nacional de las Letras in 2013.</bio> <parameter name="timelineEvents">[ { "date": "1935-03-17", "title": "Birth", "description": "Born in Barcelona, Spain" }, { "date": "1953", "title": "University Studies", "description": "Enrolled in law studies but soon abandoned them to pursue literature" }, { "date": "1963", "title": "Carabanchel Prison", "description": "Imprisoned for four months for communist affiliations; began writing Antagony while incarcerated" }, { "date": "1973", "title": "First Volume of Antagony", "description": "Publication of Recuento, the first volume of his tetralogy Antagonía" }, { "date": "1981", "title": "Completion of Antagony", "description": "Publication of Teoría del conocimiento, the final volume of Antagonía tetralogy" }, { "date": "1995", "title": "Real Academia Española", "description": "Took his seat as member of the Spanish Royal Academy after his election in 1994" }, { "date": "2013", "title": "Premio Nacional de las Letras", "description": "Awarded Spain's National Prize for Literature" }, { "date": "2026-07-12", "title": "Death", "description": "Died in Vimbodí, Tarragona, at the age of 91" } ]
