Line Bareiro (1950 – 2026)

Their Story

Line Bareiro (Olinda María Selva Bareiro Bobadilla) was a Paraguayan political scientist, lawyer, and civil rights activist who died on August 1, 2026, at age 75. She studied at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, gaining a Master's in political science in 1979 and working as a research assistant to Dieter Nohlen. Returning to Paraguay, she worked with the NGO Paraguayan Data Bank until its suppression in 1982, then became a founder member of the Centro de Documentación y Estudios in 1985 and was active in the women's movement Coordinación de Mujeres del Paraguay, founded in 1987. After Stroessner's overthrow in 1989, she was a founder member of Decidamos, a citizen advocacy group of NGOs. In 2010 Bareiro was elected to the UN's Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), to serve on the committee from 2011 until 2014. She designed equality policies in Costa Rica, Uruguay and Paraguay. Beyond the Peter Benenson Prize (2009), she received the Amanda Rorra Prize from the National Institute of Women of Uruguay (2014) and the Serafina Dávalos Prize from the Municipal Board of Asunción (2015), among other recognitions for her work in favor of equality and women's rights.
