Their Story
Klaus Hänsch was born on 15 December 1938 in Szprotawa and became one of Europe's most significant socialist politicians of the late twentieth century. He studied political science, history and sociology in Cologne, Paris and Berlin before embarking on a career in public service. From 1969 to 1970, he worked as a consultant for North Rhine-Westphalian Minister President Heinz Kühn for cultural affairs within the Franco-German Treaty framework, then worked until 1979 as a press officer and specialist advisor to the North Rhine-Westphalian Minister of Science, Johannes Rau. Hänsch served as a Member of the European Parliament representing the SPD from 17 July 1979 until 13 July 2009 and sat with the Party of European Socialists group. He was vice-chairman of the PES group from 1989, except during his service as President of the European Parliament from 1994 to 1997. From 1976 he also worked as a lecturer and from 1984 as an honorary professor at the University of Duisburg. Throughout his career, Hänsch was a dedicated advocate for European integration and socialist values, shaping European political discourse during a crucial period of continental transformation.
