Their Story

Known by his stage name Little Gerhard, Karl-Gerhard Lundkvist was a pioneering Swedish rock and roll musician who helped establish the genre in Scandinavia during the 1950s. Beginning his career as a sailor, he made his stage debut in 1952 at the Trocadero nightclub in Amsterdam, where he performed on guitar and accordion. His breakthrough came in 1958 with his debut EP and the hit song "What You've Done to Me," followed by the iconic cover "Buona Sera," which became the best-selling Swedish rock 'n' roll album of the 1950s and earned him his first gold record. That same year, he was crowned Sweden's rock king at just 24 years old. Throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s, Little Gerhard dominated Swedish charts with major hits including "Den siste mohikanen" (The Last Mohican), recorded in multiple languages for audiences across Europe. He also appeared in Swedish films and became known for his energetic performances with backing groups like the G-Men. By the late 1960s, he transitioned into songwriting and record production, playing a crucial role in discovering and developing the career of Agnetha Fältskog, who would later become a member of ABBA. He authored several of her breakthrough hits and continued to work in the music industry for decades. In 2012, he married Theptong Lundkvist. Little Gerhard remained an influential figure in Swedish popular music history until his death on July 14, 2026, at the age of 92.
