Their Story

Juan Carlos Distéfano was one of Argentina's most significant artists of the twentieth century, whose work across sculpture, painting, and graphic design explored themes of memory, history, and the human condition. Born in Villa Celina in 1933, he received his foundational training at the National School of Graphic Arts and the School of Fine Arts Manuel Belgrano in Buenos Aires. From 1960 to 1970, he played a pioneering role organizing and directing the Graphic Design Department at the Instituto Torcuato Di Tella, establishing the country's first professional center for graphic and editorial design. Distéfano's artistic practice deepened during the turbulent decades of Argentine history, encompassing the transformative sixties and seventies, the military dictatorship beginning in 1976, and democracy's return in 1984. His work consistently grappled with questions of historical trauma and collective memory. Married for over seventy years to renowned writer and dramatist Griselda Gambaro, with whom he shared exile during the military regime, Distéfano's life and art remained intertwined with Argentina's political struggles. His distinguished career brought him major recognition, including the Konex Platinum Award for Figurative Sculpture in 1982 and the Konex Brilliant Award in 1992, the highest honor from that foundation. He represented Argentina at the 2015 Venice Biennale with an exhibition titled "The Uprising of Form," and received the National Prize for Career Achievement in 2018.
