Their Story

Johannes Krisch, celebrated for his commanding presence on stage and screen, passed away at a Vienna hospital at the age of 59. Born on December 8, 1966, in Vienna, Krisch initially completed a carpenter's apprenticeship before starting his career as a freelance actor in Vienna in 1986. Director Claus Peymann brought him to the Vienna Burgtheater in 1989, where he achieved success over many years. He was a long-standing ensemble member of both the Burgtheater and the Theater in der Josefstadt. Krisch left behind a formidable legacy in European cinema and theater, characterized by raw intensity and an unmatched ability to embody deeply complex characters. He attracted considerable attention on screen in Götz Spielmann's film Revanche (2008). He appeared alongside Hollywood star Diane Kruger in the Golden Globe-winning film In the Fade. In 2016, he won the Austrian Film Award for Best Male Lead for Jack, and in 2017, he received the Great Diagonale Prize for contributions to Austrian film culture and the honorary title of Kammerschauspieler (chamber actor). According to longtime director Herbert Föttinger of the Theater in der Josefstadt, Krisch was "one of the most significant actors of his generation" in Austria, possessing the rare gift of not playing characters but experiencing them in the moment—allowing audiences to participate in that experience.
