Their Story
Jerry Murrien de Jong was a Dutch professional footballer born in Paramaribo, Suriname, who built a 17-year career as a tough and dependable defender. Beginning his playing days in the second division with Telstar and SC Heerenveen, he earned recognition for his physical style and tactical awareness, eventually joining the Eredivisie powerhouse PSV Eindhoven in 1989. Though his time at PSV was hampered by intense competition for places, de Jong earned three caps for the Netherlands between 1990 and 1991, making his international debut against Greece in a UEFA Euro 1992 qualifier. After his stint in the Dutch top flight, he ventured abroad to France's Ligue 1 with SM Caen before returning home to play for FC Eindhoven and MVV Maastricht, where he finished his playing career around age 37. De Jong remained connected to Dutch football through his son Nigel, who went on to have his own notable career in the sport.
